Home Adaptations
The independence of a disabled person may be substantially increased by the provision of appropriate adaptations to the home. Some of these may be simple and inexpensive (eg handrails in a bathroom or on a staircase) whilst others may require more significant work (eg providing downstairs bathroom facilities).
Adaptations may be provided under s2 Chronically Sick & Disabled Person’s Act 1970 or under the Disabled Facilities Grant Scheme; the provisions are to some extent overlapping and they can be confusing. There are also other provisions providing for minor adaptations when a person is discharged from hospital and so there may be a range of options for funding a home adaptation.
