Independent Appeal Panel
In school admission appeals, or in school exclusion appeals the local education authority are bound in law to arrange an panel of members who will hear appeals against decisions taken by school admission authorities or headmasters.
The panels usually comprise of three individuals (non lawyers ) who are independent of the local education authority but are usually experienced in education (for example a retired headmaster or school inspector) .
The hearings are expected to be informal but nevertheless local education authorities often appoint experienced advocates to argue the case on their behalf.
