The A Word: Autism Spectrum Disorder

Last month saw the end of a moving television series, ‘The A word’, a drama aired on BBC that spoke out about the thoughts and feelings of those living with autism. The series made significant points as to real fears families have in relation to how their child will be received by peers, as well as the community within which they reside. This series has proved very effective in opening up a conversation about autism, with various videos being added online by families to show their difficulties, and to assist the public in their understanding of the Autism Spectrum Disorder; see: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/family-kids-news/watch-parents-boy-autism-release-11259048; and http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/04/27/moving-video-shows-autistic-boy-bursting-into-tears-while-watchi/ It would seem that there is an increasing understanding as to the daily struggles those living with autism suffer, as seen by supermarket chain ASDA introducing a "quiet hour" to allow customers with autism to feel more comfortable in the store; to which the manager of the ASDA Living store at Manchester Fort stated after holding its first successful “quiet hour”, that they “had great feedback from the families who benefited”, as reported in the Independent this week. What we need to remember, however, is that although this television series and the above videos make you aware of aspects of autism, the autistic spectrum is comprehensive, and aspects of autism can vary in great detail from one person to the next. What one person, for example the head of your child’s education provider, thinks is necessary for your child to flourish, may not necessarily assist them in their educational and life progress as effectively as it may assist a child on a different level of the spectrum.
