Domestic Violence Update

Domestic Violence – Legal Aid Boost for Victims   Seeking legal aid or public funding is likely to be less traumatic for victims of domestic violence following on from the Government announcing it will remove the time limit for providing evidence.   The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that after reviewing current evidence arrangements for assessing legal aid in private family law cases the current five year time limit will be removed.   At present, the rules in relation to providing concrete evidence of domestic violence in terms of formal court convictions in Civil or Criminal Proceedings have been so strict that many have been deterred from proceedings.   It has also been confirmed that the types of evidence that will be accepted by the Legal Aid Agency will be significantly broadened which, has been welcomed by domestic violence support organisations as they believe this will remove many of the difficulties faced by victims in acquiring evidence.   If you have any query in relation to domestic violence and wish to seek protection or simply require advice do not hesitate to contact Jane Williams or Suzanne Thomas at our Cardiff or Penarth offices on 02920 388398 or to email our jane Williams j.williams@sinclairslaw.co.uk
